While implementing version 5 of Microsoft Dynamics ERP system, we were told that using lean processes would have to be done outside the system and transactions such as transfers could be used to utilize Kan-Ban processes. 

   Now we are told that version 6 will utilize all KanBan techniques. The question is:

Do lean techniques, such as Kan-ban, really work with an ERP system and is it worth upgrading to the new version to utilize lean techniques if we have already accomplished this outside the system.

Yesterday evening, we toured the facility of D'Addario & Company, one of the world's top makers of strings for musical instruments. They are three years into Lean Manufacturing and have just begun Lean in the offices.The key results of their Lean initiative has been freed up space of about 70,000 square feet and a 33% reduction in inventory. The process to get where they are involves the following steps:

1. Stabilize the Process

2. Create Flow

3. Compress the Process (shorten cycle time)

I was impressed with the operations and the results. Their journey doesn't end as they strive for continuous improvement.
